Clubs & Activities

If you have an interest in acting then Drama Club is for you! Open to all 6th-8th graders, we meet twice a month (usually on Wednesdays) from 6:45-8pm in the MP room. If acting isn't your thing, there are plenty of ways for you to contribute behind the scenes...we still need props, hair, lights, sets, etc. to put on a production.

Band is an elected class for 4th-8th grade students that happens throughout the school day. 4th grade students meet 3 days a week. 5-8th grade students meet 4 days a week. Students are not required to know an instrument prior to entrance into the program in 4th grade. After 4th grade, they can talk to Sr. Mary George about the possibility of getting caught up and entering into the program.

5th - 8th Grades are able to participate in Swing Choir. It is the Middle school choir for St. Matthew's School. This group meets: Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30-8 a.m. They perform at 2 concerts annually in the Spring and Fall, as well as lead masses on Friday. We also try to participatine in community service by doing some caroling at the Windsor of Savory for the elderly of our community. In March/April they have the opportunity to participate in solo and small ensembles for the IESA competition.

The St. Matthew art club is an elective class that is open to all 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in furthering their interest in the creative process. This class meets everyday for the duration of the year.

7th and 8th Grades are able to participate in Yearbook. This group allows students to share their interest for creating pages in the Yearbook. This group meets: Wednesday 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Science Olympiad is a team competition in which students compete in 'events' pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. It is open to St. Matt students in grades 7-8.

7th and 8th Grades are able to participate in STEM Club. This group allows students to share their interest for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) with like-minded individuals. Students are able to work independently and in groups on topics such as: Programming, Website Development, 3D Modeling, and Multimedia Editing. This group meets: Thursday 2:30-3:30 p.m.

St. Matthew Chess club is open to all students grades 3-6. The club meets in Feeney Hall the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30PM. No experience necessary, just enthusiasm.

The St. Matthew Scholastic Bowl Team is open to all students in 6th-8th grade. The team typically meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid January until the beginning of May. Scholastic Bowl is an academic competition that is regulated by the IESA. Meets consist of trivia questions, which include the following categories: math, science, history, geography, literature/grammar, spelling, sports, music, computer science, current events and home economics.

Geography Bee is like a spelling bee only about Geography.  Students in 5th-8th grade compete in 7 rounds to see who will move on the final rounds of competition.  The school winner takes a test to see if they qualify to compete in the State Geography Bee. The St. Matthew Geography Bee takes place each year in December or January.

Champaign Mixed Clovers 4-H Club serves boys and girls ages 8-18. The majority of this particular 4-H group are St. Matthew parishioners and have met at St. Matthew for over 25 years. Members can choose from a wide variety of projects in which to enroll including foods, photography, visual arts, etc. The 4-H Club sponsors community service projects as well.

Junior Great books is available to all students in grades 3-6. The Junior Great Books program uses the powerful Shared Inquiry method of learning to help students discover the meaning of thought-provoking stories and informational texts through group discussion.

Cub Scout Pack 121 is a year-round family program designed for St. Matthew (and Carrie Busey) boys in Grades 1-5 (ages 7-10). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to influence character building, good sportsmanship, greater family understanding and personal achievement. Cub Scouts do fun things with other kids! They go places and see things. They play sports. And, they build things, like race cars and bird houses.

St. Matthew Troop 121 serves to help boys mature to honorable men. They are given many opportunities to learn leadership skills within the troop, enjoy accomplishments in outdoor adventures and appreciate recognition as they advance in rank. The Troop meets weekly.

Girl Scouts is open to all Grades K-12 girls who are members of St. Matthew Parish or attend St. Matthew School. Meetings are held after school, in the school. The four goals are for each girl: 1) to become the very best person she can be; 2) to respect other people; 3) to build her own set of values and 4) to build leadership skills.
